Memories of Christmas at Peace House Shelter

24.12.2021

I have left the Peace House Shelter under the Center for Women and Development, the Vietnam Women's Union for more than 6 years now, as my second retirement, after officially retiring from the Central Vietnam Women's Union in previous years. However, the memories of Peace House Shelter are still in my mind.

That Christmas season, our staffs and the girls who were victims of human trafficking were supported here (before they returned to the locality to reunite with their families and reintegrate into the community) discussed organizing activities that are both fun and meaningful. With the attention of the Center's Board of Directors, with the guidance of a teacher from outside, we with the children made a small set of Christmas products such as: Santa Claus, bells, the shoe, the pine tree, the flowers...All are pretty and awesome.

When the product is completed, Christmas is also coming. With those Handmade gifts from Peace House Shelter, we gave one part to the CWD to decorate the Christmas tree, another part to decorate Peace House Shelter, and save it to give to foreign delegations, and the last ones were set up at the Center's Product Showroom. We felt so happy when we saw the Peace House Christmas gift hanging on a big tree at the CWD’s lobby.

PHS not only makes this one set of products, but we also make many other products such as sewing scarves, knitting shirts, hats,... both for gifts and for sale.

I bought a set of Noel products and took a photo. Today, recalling that day, I chose some photos to post to look back at my impressive Christmas season.

Ms. Doan Thi Minh, the former Manager of PeaceHouse Shelter for women and children suffering from human trafficking.

The model of Peace House Shelter: connection & support for victims of gender-based violence

Under the Vietnam Women’s Union, the shelter named Peace House was officially established on March 8, 2007. At that time, the situation of domestic violence and human trafficking in Vietnam was alarming: there was no official law on prevention of these issues, not enough facilities to support victims, not enough support from the public for the shelter model. Despite these difficulties, given the actual needs, experiences from neighboring countries, and international support, the Vietnam Women's Union managed to establish 2 branches of the Peace House Shelter to support women and children who are victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. The Center for Women and Development (CWD) was assigned the responsibility to manage, operate, and develop the shelter. By 2018, the Peace House Shelter had its third branch opened in Can Tho city.
